Helping NDIS participants find a job after leaving school

26 October 2021

It’s getting to that time of year when school leavers will be hitting the job search trail but how do NDIS participants find a job they like?

Leaving school to enter the workforce need not be such a scary prospect for school leavers thanks to the National Insurance Disability Scheme (NDIS) employment support which is available to students leaving secondary school.

This support gives school leavers the skills and confidence to help you move from school to employment.

The support offers individualised support for up to two years after finishing school to help you get ready for work and plan your pathway to employment.

They are also tailored to meet individual employment goals and may include:

  • Work experience in open employment
  • Job skills training
  • Travel training

Employment services and programs, including disability-targeted and open employment services, will continue to be responsible for providing advice and support to:

  • People with disability to prepare for, find and maintain jobs
  • Encourage employers to hire and be inclusive of people with disability in the workplace (e.g. support, training and resources, funding assistance to help employers make reasonable adjustments, and incentives for hiring people with disability, such as wage subsidies).

THE NDIS Pathways to Employment also helps school leavers, as well as others in the disability sector, not only get ready for work but also change jobs and explore volunteering as well as even preparing to return to work.

THE NDIS says having a job expands social networks, raises living standards, and increases financial independence and self-worth.

There are a lot of ways the scheme can help participants pursue their employment goals, check out the above links to help you get started.
