Focus on Mental Health during October

01 October 2021

You can help raise awareness for Mental Health Month this month by putting One Foot Forward.

October is Mental Health Month.

Eight Australians die by suicide every day.

To help prevent these deaths and shine the light on suicide prevention, The Black Dog Institute of Australia is inviting us all to step out and help save lives during their One Foot Forward campaign this month.

So far, the institute has raised $4,884,019 with nearly 37,000 stepping out for mental health and by walking together and standing together we can help this figure grow.

The statistics are staggering:

  • 1 in 5 Australians will experience symptoms of mental illness each year.
  • Suicide is the number 1 cause of death for people aged between 15 and 44 in Australia.
  • 60% of those experiencing mental illness symptoms do not seek treatment
  • By 2030 depression will be the leading health concern worldwide

The institute believes that together we can make a difference.

All you have to do is sign up for One Foot Forward and record your steps.

“Let's show people with mental illness that we're in this together,” a spokesperson for the institute said.

“Funds raised will help Black Dog Institute put ground-breaking new mental health tools that work into the hands of people who need them.”
