Around one in six people in Australia - that’s 18% or about 4.4 million of us - have a disability.
The one day dedicated to International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Friday, December 3, is hardly enough time to celebrate and shine the spotlight on the stories from these millions of people across the nation.
So, the ABC decided to partner with International Day of People with Disability in a three-week campaign to showcase a range of stories by and about people with disability across ABC websites, radio, social media, TV, and iview.
The day is dedicated to increasing awareness, understanding, and acceptance of people with a disability, but from November 19 to December 10, the ABC will feature content created by and for people with disability, with stories exploring the serious issues like housing affordability and access for people with disability, and the lighter side of life — like why one woman wrote a love letter to her disability.
IDPwD is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people living with a disability.
Each year the UN announces a theme for the day, which provides an overarching focus on how society can strive for inclusivity through the removal of physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people with disability.
The theme for IDPwD 2021 is “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world”.
The Australian Government has been supporting IDPwD since 1996 and provides funds to promote and raise awareness of the day and support activities around Australia.
It’s a day - or in ABC’s case a three-week campaign - to celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with a disability and promote inclusion through the International Day of People with Disability organisation’s sponsorships and IDPwD ambassadors. Find out more here.
Information about how you can get involved and help break down barriers (both structural and attitudinal) for people with disability can be found here.
The organisation is very excited to continue the conversation about disability across the year and into 2021 with the help of the ABC.
